WORKING SUSTAINABLY
Paving the way around the world

As a company dedicated to sustainable food production, we are committed to ensuring that we minimise our impact on the environment and conserve resources as much as possible in everything we do. For us, this is also a natural part of responsible corporate conduct.

When it comes to transport, we are already perfectly positioned, being located in the heart of Europe, with access to the Rhine, Europe’s busiest waterway, as well as rail access and close proximity to the motorway – Fortin’s sites in the ports of Düsseldorf and Neuss couldn’t be better placed.

Delivery of raw materials from Scandinavia and the shipment of our products to our markets in Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America by water or rail is not only economically, but first and foremost ecologically sound.

The Düsseldorf Climate Pact – we’re on board!

Achieving climate neutrality by 2035 – it was with this goal in mind that the state capital Düsseldorf, the Düsseldorf Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Düsseldorf Chamber of Skilled Crafts and the Düsseldorf District Guild of Craftsmen founded the “Düsseldorf Climate Pact with Business”. This cooperative network assists companies as they move towards a more environmentally friendly and sustainable future.
As a company that is committed to sustainability, we are part of the Düsseldorf Climate Pact, having signed the climate agreement, and want to contribute to making Düsseldorf climate-neutral by 2035.

A boost for our energy footprint and environmental protection

Our energy management system according to DIN EN ISO 50001 ensures that we are constantly improving our energy balance. With the installation of a solar power system – which will supply us with a significant proportion of the electricity we need – currently underway, Fortin is also taking a major step towards achieving sustainable power generation, which is good both for the environment and for the company.

OUR RESPONSIBILITY
Fair and caring as a matter of principle

As an international manufacturing company, we bear responsibility not just for our own team or in our role as a company that trains young people and gives them a good start in their careers, but also for all of our supplier relationships.

As a member of the Sedex (Supplier Ethical Data Exchange) organisation, we have made a commitment to ensure continuous improvement in ethical conduct along the entire supply chain. The Sedex SMETA 4 Pillar (Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit) ensures that we are governed by the principles of responsible and sustainable corporate governance in all social and ethical matters: working conditions, health and safety, the environment and business ethics.

Success comes with obligations

As a company, we aren’t just part of the economy, but of society as a whole – with its multifaceted principles of successful cooperation, one of which is solidarity – which is why it is only natural for us to be committed to social issues.

We are pleased to support cultural projects and charities, including cultural institutions in our home city of Düsseldorf that are particularly close to our hearts, such as the Shipping Museum or the annual Düsseldorf Festival, as well as development aid organisations such as the children’s aid association “ora Kinderhilfe” or the Global Aid Network, both of which help people in need in many countries around the world.

Fortin’s success – just as that of any other company – depends on intact societies. We are pleased to be able to give something back with financial aid and donations in kind and to contribute to the common good.

“A city only becomes worth living in thanks to the commitment of its people and the business community, which is why I am very glad that such a long-established company like Fortin is leading the way. I’m thrilled about their great support for so many social, charitable and cultural projects.”

Thomas Geisel, former Lord Mayor of the City of Düsseldorf

Beyond borders

For us, responsibility doesn't just apply to our own country, but also transcends borders, which is why we are actively supporting the Fly & Help Foundation in the construction of a new primary school in Akete, Ghana.

This village in the Bono region, with a population of about 3,500, is about 420 km away from the capital Accra. There is no health facility in the village and the nearest health centre is about 13 km away.

Akete Primary School has been in existence for over 50 years and is the only public school serving Akete and surrounding villages. It is currently attended by a total of 410 pupils, with many more children of school age unable to attend due to the desolate state of the school.

The junior high school is in the fortunate position of having a brick building, while the pre-school and primary school are accommodated in a wooden building without any doors, windows or proper flooring, meaning that the students are exposed to the weather and stray animals without any protection, so that lessons have to be cancelled when it rains hard, resulting in long school closures during the rainy season. There are no toilets and no well, so the pupils and teachers have to relieve themselves in the open, resulting in horrendous sanitary conditions.

The project:

  • Construction of a new building with 6 classrooms, staff room and storage room
  • Furnishing with school furniture
  • Drilling of a well with a mechanical water supply
  • Construction of a toilet block with 8 toilets, urinals for the boys, a girls' changing room and a disabled toilet
  • Hygiene and maintenance training

Goals:

  • Providing access to education for all children of school age
  • Access to clean water and proper sanitation with
  • Hygiene education and training
  • Meeting the school's drinking water and sanitation needs
  • Improving the standard of education
    Reducing water-borne diseases

STRONG, SUSTAINABLE, HEALTHY:
Oats – the amazing grain

Fortin processes many types of cereal, but none plays such an important role for us as oats. We have specialised in oats from the very outset, and are now recognised as the leading experts in the field of oat products.
